UNTITLED
As I walk through the halls
With my high school sweetheart
We look back on all of the fun things
School and being young was about,
When I was in first grade I wanted to be like the
Fifth graders, playing tag, climbing on the monkey bars.
When I was in sixth grade I wanted to be like the eighth graders
Hanging out with the boys, being on the school basketball team
And being the oldest. Freshmen year I looked up
to the seniors playing games at the school assembly’s
Being just like the homecoming queen, driving a car. Before I knew
It, it was my time, time for the real world, time to grow up,
Time to put on my cap and gown and walk down the aisle.
I’ve been waiting for this time to come my whole life, couldn’t wait
To grow up, now that that time is gone, ten years down the road, I
Take another walk through the halls, and I miss it. Don’t take your
Days of youth for granted, because one day they will slip away.
Soon it will be time to take care of business, find the real meaning
To life besides the fun and games. Looking back at the
Empty halls I realize my childhood is over, time to
Give my child the life I once lived.

Very real! I like the line about missing it years from now and not taking youth for granted.
ReplyDeleteI haven't known you very long, but I know I'll look back and think of you years from now and smile.
aww eva your a sweetheart!! I'll always be thinking of you too!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you stop to consider what you were looking forward to at different ages. I also like the theme of how life flies by so quickly that when we do arrive at a certain age or point of our life, we are not so sure about being there yet. Nice work, Ally. Some really emotional and mature moments throughout the poem.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jay! hah I tried my hardest :) life is good!
